10 Things Every Middle School Science Teacher Should Prepare Before School Starts

If you’ve taught middle school science for more than a year, you’ve probably experienced that moment sometime around late September when you think, I really wish I had set this up before school started.

Maybe it’s the stack of unfiled lab papers that’s somehow taken over your desk. Maybe students still aren’t sure where to turn in assignments. Or maybe you’re explaining—for the tenth time that week—what they’re supposed to do when they walk into class.

I’ve been there.

After teaching middle school science for more than a decade, I’ve learned that the beginning of the school year isn’t really about decorating bulletin boards or perfectly organizing every cabinet. It’s about creating systems that make your classroom easier to manage once 150 middle school students start walking through your door every day. The best classroom setups aren’t necessarily the prettiest—they’re the ones that quietly eliminate hundreds of tiny problems before they ever happen.

Every August, teachers spend hours deciding where to hang posters or what color to make their bulletin boards. While there’s nothing wrong with creating a welcoming space, I’ve found that the things that make the biggest difference aren’t always the things students notice. It’s the routines, expectations, and organizational systems working behind the scenes that determine whether your classroom feels calm and productive or chaotic and exhausting.

If you’re looking for a place to start, here are the ten areas I would focus on before students arrive.


1. Build Your Classroom Around Procedures, Not Decorations

One of the biggest mindset shifts I ever made was realizing that procedures are far more important than decorations.

Students don’t automatically know how your classroom works. They don’t know where to put late work, how to borrow supplies, what to do after a quiz, or whether they’re supposed to begin working immediately when they walk in. If those expectations aren’t taught explicitly, students will create their own routines—and they almost never match the ones we had in mind.

The first week of school should feel almost repetitive. Demonstrate each procedure, let students practice it, give feedback, and practice it again. It might seem excessive in August, but those few extra minutes can save countless interruptions throughout the rest of the year.

Think through the small moments that happen every day. How do students enter the room? Where do they pick up handouts? What should they do if they’re absent? How do they transition into lab groups? What happens if they finish early? The more answers you have to those questions before school begins, the smoother your classroom will run.

I used to think that spending several class periods teaching procedures meant I was “losing instructional time.” Now I see it as an investment. Those routines pay you back every single day for the rest of the school year.


2. Organize for Your Future Self

At the beginning of every school year, everything is clean. Cabinets are organized, counters are clear, and every lesson feels manageable.

Then September happens.

Labs start piling up. Copies multiply overnight. Goggles disappear. Students ask for colored pencils, scissors, glue sticks, tape, and makeup work—often all within the same class period.

I’ve learned that organization isn’t about making your classroom look nice. It’s about reducing the number of decisions you have to make every day.

Instead of asking yourself where something belongs each time you use it, decide once before school starts. Label bins. Give frequently used supplies a permanent home. Keep absent work in one location. Store extra notebook pages together. Create a dedicated space for finished work, graded work, and papers waiting to be copied.

Every system you create before school starts is one less thing you’ll have to think about when you’re juggling six class periods and a lab practical.


3. Decide What Happens During the First Five Minutes

The first five minutes of class often determine how the rest of the period will go.

Students naturally need a few minutes to settle in. If you don’t provide structure during that time,

they’ll create their own—and it usually involves talking about lunch, sports, or whatever happened in the hallway.

That’s why I love bell ringers.

Whether students are analyzing a photograph, answering a review question, making an observation, o

r responding to a scientific phenomenon, they immediately know what they’re supposed to do. There’s no confusion, no wasted time, and no waiting for everyone to quiet down before instruction can begin.

Consistency is far more important than creativity. Students don’t need a brand-new routine every day. They need a predictable one that allows them to transition into learning without thinking about what comes next.


4. Create Systems That Encourage Student Independence

Middle school students ask a lot of questions.

Some are thoughtful and scientific.

Others sound more like, “What page are we on?” even though it’s written on the board in three different places.

Rather than answering the same logistical questions dozens of times each day, build systems that allow students to answer many of those questions themselves.

A clearly posted agenda, organized science notebooks, labeled classroom areas, and predictable routines all reduce student dependence on the teacher. That frees you to spend your time helping students think critically instead of repeating directions.

One of my goals each year is to make myself less necessary for the routine parts of class. The more students can do independently, the more time I have for meaningful conversations about science.


5. Think Through Your Labs Before You Think About Your Labs

Planning engaging science labs is exciting.

Planning how students will get materials, clean up safely, return equipment, and transition between activities isn’t nearly as exciting—but it’s just as important.

Every lab has dozens of little routines hidden inside it. Who collects supplies? Where do goggles go afterward? What happens if something spills? Who checks the stations before students leave?

When those expectations are clear, labs feel organized instead of stressful.

Students can focus on learning science because they aren’t trying to figure out what they’re supposed to do next.


6. Simplify Your Grading Before the Papers Start Arriving

If there’s one thing I wish someone had told me when I started teaching, it’s this:

Not everything needs to be graded.

Before school starts, decide what truly measures learning and what simply provides practice. Having a clear plan for notebooks, labs, quizzes, projects, and daily assignments makes grading much more manageable later in the year.

A grading system should support your teaching—not become a second full-time job.


7. Plan Relationships Before Content

It’s tempting to jump straight into your curriculum.

After all, there’s always pressure to cover standards and keep pace with the school calendar.

But the first week is really about building trust.

Students who feel comfortable in your classroom are more willing to ask questions, participate in discussions, and take academic risks. A simple engineering challenge, an observation activity, or a collaborative science task often tells you far more about your students than a traditional worksheet ever could.

Content can wait a day or two.

Building classroom culture can’t.


8. Organize Your Digital Classroom Too

A well-organized filing cabinet doesn’t help much if your computer desktop is covered with fifty files named “Science Notes Final FINAL.”

Spend an afternoon creating folders for labs, presentations, assessments, review activities, answer keys, and student resources. Give files consistent names that make sense six months from now—not just today.

Your future self will thank you the first time you need to find a lesson in under thirty seconds.


9. Have a Plan B (and Probably a Plan C)

Technology fails.

Assemblies run long.

Fire drills interrupt carefully planned lessons.

Students finish early.

These things aren’t exceptions—they’re part of teaching.

Keeping a few high-quality backup activities on hand means those unexpected moments don’t derail the entire class. A thought-provoking science article, a review challenge, a one-pager, or a quick STEM design task can turn lost time into meaningful learning.


10. Remember What Students Will Actually Remember

Years from now, very few students will remember where your bulletin board border came from.

They probably won’t remember what color your storage bins were either.

What they’ll remember is whether they felt welcomed when they walked into your classroom. They’ll remember whether mistakes were treated as opportunities to learn. They’ll remember whether science felt interesting, challenging, and accessible.

That’s the classroom worth preparing.

Everything else is just details.


Final Thoughts

Every August, teachers feel pressure to have everything perfect before the first student walks through the door.

The truth is, your classroom will evolve all year long. You’ll tweak procedures, move furniture, reorganize cabinets, and probably change your mind about at least a dozen things before winter break.

That’s completely normal.

The goal isn’t to create a perfect classroom. The goal is to build a classroom that works—for you and for your students.

If you spend your time before school creating thoughtful routines, organizing the materials you use every day, and establishing clear expectations, you’ll spend far less time putting out fires once the school year begins. Instead, you’ll be able to focus on what brought you into teaching in the first place: helping students become curious, confident young scientists.
