Rollback Can Energy Transfer Lab | Potential & Kinetic Energy Activity | Gr. 6-8

Description

Investigate Energy Transformations with a Rollback Can!

Bring potential and kinetic energy to life with this engaging Rollback Can Energy Transfer Lab! Students observe the fascinating motion of a rollback can and use evidence from their investigation to explain how kinetic energy is transformed into elastic potential energy and back again.

This hands-on activity encourages students to develop scientific explanations while exploring energy transfer, energy transformation, and motion in a memorable way. Best of all, the rollback cans can be reused year after year, making this an inexpensive, low-prep addition to your physical science unit.

Students Will:

  • Observe the motion of a rollback can
  • Develop and test a hypothesis
  • Measure and record the distance the can travels
  • Explain how the internal parts of the can affect its motion
  • Identify how energy is transferred and transformed throughout the investigation
  • Create a diagram showing the primary forms of energy at different points in the can’s motion
  • Support their explanations using evidence from their observations

This lab includes a fully editable PowerPoint version. All materials are compatible with Google drive.
